Welcome back to Pattaya — if you can get past these conditions
Returning visitors face visa hurdles, rising costs, and infrastructure issues in Pattaya’s new reality. PATTAYA, Thailand – Lately, many returning visitors to Pattaya find it harder to rekindle the magic they once felt—if they can even get past a series of daunting challenges. For those thinking of making a comeback to Pattaya, the welcome may come with a long list of frustrations. Visa headaches such as the onerous 90-day reporting requirement have become a major hurdle, causing many to reconsider extended stays. The cost of living has risen sharply, especially in real estate, making it difficult for foreigners and even locals to find affordable housing. Meanwhile, the infamous Pattaya nightlife scene has seen a shift. “Girls on the phone, girls of the night are way overpriced,” another expat lamented. The atmosphere is no longer as enticing; with many feeling the value just isn’t there anymore. Beyond that, the city’s infrastructure leaves much to be desired. Footpaths along most streets are poorly maintained, making simple strolls a challenge. Shopping options often disappoint, with many stores pushing counterfeit or low-quality goods instead of authentic products, tarnishing Pattaya’s once colorful marketplace reputation. Many tourists feel unwelcome as scooter rentals and shop quality highlight growing frustrations. Visitors also report feeling singled out. Scooter rentals, for example, seem to target foreigners exclusively, with high prices and strict booking policies, while locals zip around on modified scooters without licenses, insurance, or registration. “2,000 baht for a minor law violation, while locals drive freely,” a visitor said, highlighting the inequity. Perhaps most telling is the general sentiment that tourists are no longer feeling genuinely welcome. This unwelcoming vibe, combined with the practical difficulties, has led many long-term visitors to move on. “PS I had a great time but like others, I’m moving on,” shared one departing expat. Many agree the decline began around 2018, a turning point after which Pattaya started losing the qualities that once made it special. So, who will make Pattaya great again? Tourists? Expats? Local businesses? Or the bar girls? For now, the city waits to see if it can recapture its former glory — but the road ahead looks challenging.
