Rough seas, high waves, and strong winds batter Pattaya and nearby islands — travelers urged to take precautions
Heavy rains and strong winds hit Pattaya coast—visitors to nearby islands urged to stay safe and avoid travel during rough seas. PATTAYA, Thailand – As heavy rains and thunderstorms continue to spread across Thailand, visitors to the islands off the coast of Pattaya are urged to exercise caution. The Meteorological Department reports that 60-80% of the country is experiencing rain, with some areas facing intense downpours, especially in the north, northeast, east, and western southern regions. The southwest monsoon remains strong, accompanied by a low-pressure system over the South China Sea that has intensified into a tropical depression. This weather pattern is driving increased rainfall and stronger winds across Thailand, including the eastern seaboard and Pattaya’s surrounding islands. The department forecasts high waves ranging from 2 to 3 meters around the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, rising over 3 meters in areas affected by thunderstorms. Small boats are strongly advised to avoid venturing out until the weather improves, especially around Pattaya’s nearby islands such as Koh Larn, Koh Sak, and Koh Phai. Local authorities warn visitors and residents to prepare for potential flash floods, sudden strong winds, and rough seas. Those planning island trips should monitor weather updates closely and consider postponing travel during this period of unsettled weather to avoid risks. In addition to marine safety, motorists are urged to avoid driving through low-lying roads that have become flooded due to heavy rain, as water levels can rise rapidly and pose serious hazards. The rainy conditions are expected to persist through mid-June, with gradual improvement towards the end of the month as high pressure from the Southern Hemisphere begins to influence the weather.
