Russian couple fakes dispute, skips massage bill in Pattaya — staff disheartened amid economic slump
CCTV captures tourists skipping out on 700-baht fee, leaving staff distressed amid economic downturn.
PATTAYA, Thailand – A massage parlor worker in Pattaya has spoken out after a well-dressed Russian couple allegedly received a full massage treatment and then fled without paying, adding emotional stress to local businesses already struggling during the economic downturn.
The incident took place late at night on June 7 at the “Smooth Day Thai Massage” shop located in Soi Phra Tamnak 5. Ms. Anyamanee Thantim, 48, a staff member at the shop, recounted the event to reporters and provided CCTV footage as evidence in hopes of warning other business owners to remain vigilant against similar scams.
According to Ms. Anyamanee, a Russian couple, estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old and dressed like typical tourists, entered the shop and requested a traditional Thai massage with extra intensity. The staff complied, rotating in masseuses as requested.
Once the massage session ended, the couple began to dispute the cost. Though the shop tried to explain that the rates varied by package, the couple seemed dissatisfied. In an effort to avoid conflict and maintain a positive image of Pattaya as a tourist destination, the shop agreed to charge them the standard rate of 350 baht per hour per person. The couple appeared to agree and showed a bank transfer slip as proof of payment.
Russian tourists receive full service, show fake payment slip, and escape on motorbike without paying.
However, when the shop checked their account, the payment had not been received. As staff tried to stop them, the couple quickly fled on a black automatic motorcycle. CCTV captured the escape clearly, showing the couple as they drove off.
The footage has since been shared on social media and with local media outlets to raise awareness. Ms. Anyamanee emphasized the damage incidents like this can cause, especially during low season when business is already slow due to economic challenges.
The massage parlor has filed a formal complaint with police at Pattaya City Police Station (Dongtan Branch), where officers have accepted the CCTV footage as evidence. Authorities are now working to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Local business owners are being urged to remain cautious, especially when dealing with unfamiliar customers during these uncertain times.
