Authorities affirm Thailand remains safe despite rising tourist-related crimes, particularly involving some Chinese nationals, as enforcement is stepped up nationwide. PATTAYA, Thailand – The tourism promotion measure carries both financial and security implications, prompting increased enforcement to address emerging challenges. The government admitted that while the free visa policy brings economic benefits, it also comes with certain risks, including potential misuse by criminal elements. However, authorities affirm that Thailand remains safe, with security measures being strictly enforced. The Ministry of Defense explained that the rise in crimes committed by some foreign tourists, particularly from China, should be addressed according to law and not viewed as a failure of national security. Concerns over exaggerated rumors, such as organ trafficking, were dismissed as baseless. Regarding the viral image of a man dressed like a military police officer attending a Chinese event, it was confirmed that the incident took place in December 2024. An internal investigation has been ordered to determine whether the individual acted in an official capacity or impersonated military personnel, which would constitute a criminal offense. The government emphasized that while negative incidents may occur, the number of tourists entering Thailand remains high. The drop in Chinese visitors was attributed to the decline of zero-dollar tours. As for allegations of Chinese nationals exploiting Thailand for illicit purposes or infiltrating local political or business structures, the government confirmed it is aware of and actively addresses the issue through legal channels. The visa exemption program is seen as a crucial economic stimulus and will continue, though authorities may review and adjust the length of stay if needed. The Ministry of Defense dismisses organ trafficking rumors as baseless and insists all legal violations will be addressed through proper channels. The government maintains the visa-free policy will continue as a key economic driver but may adjust regulations to prevent misuse.
