Wrong-way crashes rise in Pattaya: drivers or flawed road design?
Wrong-way driving strikes again: Food delivery rider injured in head-on collision on Soi Mab Yai Lia 34, Pattaya. PATTAYA, Thailand – Yet another serious accident involving wrong-way driving has occurred in Pattaya, highlighting a growing concern among locals about the city’s chaotic and often confusing traffic conditions. Residents frequently point to the prevalence of vehicles traveling against the flow of traffic as a dangerous problem that endangers everyone on the road. This latest crash adds to a mounting list of incidents that raise questions about whether driver behavior or the city’s road design is to blame for these recurring dangers. With narrow lanes, unclear signage, and heavy congestion, Pattaya’s streets can be a challenge even for experienced drivers, increasing the risk of collisions caused by wrong-way maneuvers. At approximately 12:06 a.m. on Tuesday, the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Center received a distress call reporting a head-on motorcycle collision at the entrance of Soi Mab Yai Lia 34 (Nern Plub Wan) in East Pattaya. Rescue personnel arrived to find a blue-black Honda Wave 125 lying damaged in the middle of the road. The rider, 34-year-old food delivery rider Worathep Srisuksankongkha, sustained abrasions but remained conscious. The second vehicle, a red-white Honda Wave 125 bearing Ubon Ratchathani license plates, had been ridden by a young man estimated to be between 20 and 25 years old. He suffered critical injuries and was found unconscious in a pool of blood. Rescuers administered first aid before urgently transporting him to the hospital. According to Worathep, the other rider was driving against traffic at high speed before the two collided head-on. “He was coming straight at me in the wrong lane — I couldn’t avoid it,” Worathep recounted. Police investigators documented the scene and will review CCTV footage to determine the exact cause of the crash. Meanwhile, questions are being raised once again about Pattaya’s street safety culture — particularly the frequency of wrong-way motorbike riders, which poses a daily threat to locals, tourists, and delivery workers alike, prompting renewed calls for improved road safety measures in Pattaya.
