One honk away from a beating — even women not spared, a warning to Pattaya’s road users
Dashcam captures shocking assault on expectant mother after minor traffic dispute. PATTAYA, Thailand – In Pattaya, honking your horn might do more than clear traffic — it could spark violence. Road rage incidents are becoming alarmingly frequent, with tempers flaring over the smallest provocation. Even women aren’t spared — not even those visibly pregnant, as recent events in a nearby busy town have shown. A case from Sri Racha, just outside Pattaya, shocked the public when a young woman was brutally assaulted by two male youths on a motorbike after she honked her horn twice at a traffic light. The reason? The car ahead had suddenly turned, and she gave a routine warning honk. But instead of moving on, the two young men took offense. They chased her down at high speed, ultimately cutting her off on Kao Kilo Road in Surasak subdistrict. When she stopped, they jumped off their bike, blocked her path, and began slapping her repeatedly — even as she pleaded, “I’m seven months pregnant.” One of them reportedly struck her harder after she said this. “I was terrified,” Atchariya recalled. “They didn’t care that I was pregnant. When I told them, they hit me even harder.” Thankfully, another driver honked from behind, prompting the attackers to flee. Dashcam footage from that car captured the incident clearly, and the driver shared the video with Atchariya to use as evidence. She has since filed a formal police complaint with Sri Racha Police Station, presenting video proof and the suspects’ license plate numbers. She also plans to request access to municipal CCTV cameras to support the investigation. The attack highlights a growing problem in Chonburi province and Pattaya’s road culture — a lack of patience, rampant aggression, and the danger of retaliation for something as minor as a horn beep. For many locals, especially women, even a routine drive home can suddenly turn dangerous. With this case gaining attention, residents are urging police to take swift action. Atchariya hopes the suspects are caught soon, not only for her own justice but to set a precedent: road rage can’t be allowed to thrive — not in Pattaya, and not anywhere. “I was terrified,” Atchariya recalled. “They didn’t care that I was pregnant. When I told them, they hit me even harder.”
