Thai premier Paetongtarn Shinawatra speaks to Lieutenant General Boosin Padklang, commander of the 2nd Army Area. Several sources are warning that a new army putsch is a distinct possibility within weeks or months. The Council of Foreign Relations, Thailand’s Tourism Council and even the defence minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, have all warned that a “non-democratic accident” could occur in “coup-culture” Thailand. They note the two obvious dangers: the threat of bloodshed on the Thai-Cambodian closed borders, which are already under effective martial law on the Thai side, and looming anti-government street demonstrations getting out of hand. Behind both controversies is intense Thai patriotism and nationalism in sections of the Thai population. Border territorial disputes were present in the previous coup years, 2006 and 2014, though not at simmering points as they are now. The two putsches dislodged a pro-Shinawatra administrations and the composition of the present government is another key similarity at the present time. There have been 22 Thai coup attempts, 13 successful, in the last 100 years. On the other hand, there are reasons to question the imminence of another army takeover. Professor Thitinan Pongsudhirak, an international security expert, points out that the current military establishment is well aware that the economy at present is in a weak state which a coup could worsen. For example, international tourism could be hit especially if visitors found their insurances were invalid because of national martial law. A new anti-democratic intervention would be the first in the new reign and might attract special unpopularity because of that. Moreover, the constitutional court could intervene and either clear prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra of alleged constitutional breaches, or order her suspension pending judicial investigation. The Cambodian border issue could either deteriorate or improve, for example by a mutual decision to reopen land exit and entry points. But all commentators, optimistic and pessimistic, agree that the immediate issue will be the organized Bangkok demo set for the upcoming weekend. Whether this turns into a nasty and long-term standoff or is managed successfully by supervising police without army backup is likely the determinant. As former premier Prem Tinsulanonda once said, “All a coup achieves is to put a sticking plaster on a serious wound”.

Chon Buri farmer busted with 10,000 meth pills in stingLegacyA routine undercover operation in Nonthaburi turned into a major drug bust when Bang Lamung Police apprehended a 42 year old farmer attempting to smuggle 10,000 methamphetamine pills across provincial lines for sale in Chon Buri. The arrest took place at 12.30pm yesterday, June 26, outside a convenience store in the Sai Yai subdistrict of Nonthaburi province. Acting on a tip from an informant, Bang Lamung Police orchestrated an undercover operation, led by Deputy Superintendent Police Lieutenant Colonel Suphawat Lathapreecha, Sub-Inspector Pol. Lt. Col. Pakorn Mueansi, and Deputy Sub-Inspector Pol. Lt. Thongthawat Phonlakorn, supported by the Special Suppression Unit. The operation targeted Nopparat, who had agreed to sell 10,000 meth pills for 55,000 baht, a transaction arranged over the phone. The delivery was set to take place outside the convenience store on Rural Road 3004 in Sai Yai, Sai Noi, Nonthaburi. At the location, officers observed Nopparat riding a green Honda Giorno motorcycle, carrying a black plastic bag. As he approached the undercover agent’s car to make the handover, police moved in and arrested him. A subsequent search of the motorcycle revealed 6,000 meth pills in the black plastic bag, with an additional 4,000 pills found on his person. The total count amounted to 10,000 pills, which were immediately seized. During interrogation, Nopparat confessed to regularly transporting meth from Nonthaburi to Chon Buri, collaborating with small-scale drug dealers in Bang Lamung. He revealed that he intentionally avoided selling drugs in his hometown to evade suspicion from local police. A rice farmer by trade, Nopparat admitted that his involvement in drug trafficking was prompted by financial struggles, exacerbated by a gambling addiction to the hi-lo dice game, reported The Pattaya News. Nopparat now faces serious charges, including attempted distribution and possession of Category 1 narcotics (meth), as well as illegal consumption of meth and operating a motorcycle under the influence. The harrowing ordeal took place in Pattaya, with the victim, identified as David, a special correspondent for a Russian news agency, left with bruises and marks of assault. Yesterday, June 26, at 9pm, Pattaya City Police received a distress call from 28 year old David who arrived at the police station visibly injured. The victim, who spoke through an interpreter, recounted a terrifying series of events that began early that morning. Around 5am today, David, who was staying at a hotel in Jomtien, was ambushed in his room by a group of four Russian men. The assailants had planned the attack meticulously, using a decoy to gain access to his room before bursting in with guns drawn. They immediately restrained him with police-style handcuffs, blindfolded him with a black bag, and threatened him with violence, hitting him with a gun. In a terrifying twist, the gang forced David to contact his wife in Bangkok while they recorded a disturbing video of him being assaulted, bruised, and battered. The video, which also featured threatening messages, was sent to his wife, along with a ransom demand. The perpetrators warned her that if she involved the police or failed to deliver the requested items, her husband would not survive. In a state of panic, David’s wife agreed to the ransom terms. She placed a Rolex Daytona luxury watch, valued at about 600,000 baht, at a pre-arranged meeting point in Bangkok, along with the coordinates. When the time arrived, she captured an image of a suspicious man, dressed in a white T-shirt and black pants, believed to be one of the kidnappers, picking up the items. But the extortion didn’t stop there. The gang continued to demand more money, this time in the form of Bitcoin, transferring over 1.9 million baht to a specified wallet. After receiving the ransom, the criminals dumped David in Pattaya, but not before assaulting him again and damaging the vehicle, reported Amarin TV. Pattaya City Police have since detained some suspects and are working tirelessly to track down the rest of the gang. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage, gathering witness testimonies, and tracing the Bitcoin transaction to locate the remaining perpetrators.
