U.S. Update: “One Big Beautiful Bill” Moves Forward  On May 22, 2025, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R.1), an expanded successor to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.  This bill introduces a Residence Based Taxation (RBT) proposal, allowing American citizens residing abroad to opt out of U.S. income tax so long as their income is exclusively from foreign sources.  If passed by the Senate, this would mean that American retirees in Thailand would no longer need to file or pay U.S. taxes on foreign income. However, this remains a proposal and must still pass the U.S. Senate before becoming law. Thailand Update: More Flexibility on Foreign Income Tax As of May–June 2025, the Thai Revenue Department is drafting a new Royal Decree to relax taxation rules on income remitted from abroad. Chinese gang busted in Pattaya over illegal online lending racketLegacyPattaya cops smashed an illegal online loan syndicate run by Chinese nationals, uncovering a shady operation involving 25 suspects holed up in luxury homes, one of whom had overstayed his visa for over five years. Officers led by Police Major General Thawatkiat Jindakawnnaong yesterday, June 17, stormed two upscale properties in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung, Chon Buri, executing search warrants in a coordinated raid. Inside, police found 24 Chinese men and one woman allegedly operating an online loan service targeting clients back in China via the QQ messaging app. The crew had all entered Thailand on tourist visas and had no work permits, making their stay, and their side hustle, completely illegal. One man, 42 year old Mr Qiao, stunned officers when checks revealed he’d overstayed his visa by five years, one month and four days. Pattaya News revealed that police seized a trove of evidence including Chinese-language ledgers, notebooks, laptops, mobile phones, and Internet routers, tools believed to be used in the illicit operation. The suspects were arrested without incident. Officers charged the group with “participation in a secret society with unlawful intentions” and “engaging in work without appropriate permits.” Mr Qiao also faces a separate charge for overstaying his visa. All three have been charged under immigration laws and handed to investigators. The crackdown is part of a nationwide push to root out foreign nationals violating the Immigration Act B.E. 2522, Foreign Workers’ Employment Act, and the Foreign Business Act, as Thai authorities tighten the net on organised crime and visa fraud. Teen gangs’ turf war ends in crash and clash near PattayaLegacyA violent street brawl between two rival teen gangs turned a quiet Chon Buri village into a battleground on Monday night, ending with busted bikes, bloodied teens, and a trail of weapons left behind. CCTV footage captured the mayhem in Nong Ket Yai at around 8.51pm on Monday, June 16, showing nearly 20 armed teens, many riding motorcycles, squaring off in a chaotic fight that’s since gone viral on Thai social media. According to reports, the drama kicked off when a group of Bang Lamung kids rolled into the area looking for trouble, targeting local teens known as the “Nong Ket” gang, aged between 16 and 18. But the would-be invasion backfired spectacularly when several of the Bang Lamung bikers lost control and smashed into one another near a bend, just 300 metres from the local police post. Seizing their chance, the local lads launched a swift counterattack, chasing the shaken invaders down a nearby alley. Several Bang Lamung teens ended up injured in the scuffle. One eyewitness, a 35 year old grocery shop owner called Tor, described the moment things kicked off. “The local kids were just hanging around when the Bang Lamung lot turned up. Tragic hit-and-run kills mother in Chon BuriLegacyA tragic hit-and-run incident occurred when a motorcycle was struck by an unidentified vehicle, leaving a 30 year old convenience store worker dead at the scene. The accident happened on the Bypass Road in front of the Phra Phrom Village in Mueang district, Chon Buri, yesterday, June 17, at 11pm. Officers from Mueang Chon Buri Police Station and rescue personnel from Trikuntham Foundation were called to the scene, where they found Oranuch’s body next to her severely damaged Honda Wave motorcycle. Another person was seriously injured and taken to Chon Buri Hospital. Oranuch’s husband was in shock and in tears when he could not reach her by phone. He went searching and discovered the accident scene, where he found his wife had been hit by a mysterious vehicle and left to die on the roadside. The tragic incident happened only three months after Oranuch had given birth. A colleague from Oranuch’s workplace confirmed that both the deceased and the injured had left the store less than half an hour before the accident. A familiar motorcycle taxi driver had informed the store about the accident, prompting the colleague to rush to the scene and confirm the victim’s identity. Oranuch’s husband, Ek, shared that his wife had left work around 10pm and was riding home as usual. When she did not return home, he went to search for her, leading him to the accident site where he discovered what had happened. The situation was particularly heart-wrenching as the couple had recently welcomed a baby. A nearby truck driver recounted that he had parked his vehicle to buy food when he heard a loud crash.
