It was around 9pm on Sunday, April 27, when a peaceful evening at Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya was interrupted by a slippery act of thievery. A 13 year old boy, named only as Thermo, was fishing near the pier in Nongprue when his iPhone XR, left resting on a nearby concrete ledge, suddenly vanished. Witnesses say a man climbed over a railing, nabbed the device, and made a not-so-smooth attempt to flee. Fortunately, 19 year old Thanabodi, who was fishing alongside the youngster, clocked the suspicious movement and sprang into action. “I saw him take the phone and told him to stop. He questioned if it really belonged to Thermo and asked for proof.” Thermo calmly unlocked the phone to prove ownership, at which point the alleged thief quickly handed it back, clearly rattled. Police arrived shortly after, finding the suspect, identified only as Jinnawat , already detained by locals, with the phone recovered, Pattaya News reported. Jinnawat claimed it was all a misunderstanding. He told officers he works at the pier selling ferry tickets and thought the device had simply been left behind. “I didn’t mean to steal it. I just picked it up thinking someone had forgotten it.” Still, officers weren’t entirely convinced by his story and hauled him off to Pattaya City Police Station for further questioning. Back in February, a 68 year old security guard was left shaken after a brazen thief swiped his phone right under his nose during an overnight shift at a local condominium. Somkuan Chitphak said he felt helpless and ignored after reporting the crime. “I just want justice. No one followed up.” With yet another case of phone theft making headlines, frustrated locals say it’s time for a crackdown, before more victims get dialled into trouble. Just steps from the busy Tony Intersection on South Pattaya Road, and worryingly close to a traffic police booth, a young woman’s nightmare began at around 11pm on Sunday, April 25. The victim, identified only as Ms Wadee (alias), said she was alone in the shop when a Thai man stormed in, behaving erratically. “He had trembling hands and a very intense, unsettling stare.” Dressed in a black T-shirt, long trousers and white sandals, the man first asked about the price of cannabis. But things turned sinister when he blocked Ms Wadee’s path. Trying to defuse the situation, she pretended to need the toilet, only for the thug to shove her inside and launch a brutal attack, punching her repeatedly in the stomach. A brief struggle erupted, sending furniture crashing to the floor and startling the attacker just long enough for Ms Wadee to seize her chance. She asked if he wanted money, but instead of answering, the man bolted from the scene, Pattaya News reported. A shop owner who had been robbed by two foreign thieves decided not to wait for the police, and instead tracked the culprits down himself, dishing out a beating at their accommodation. Other shop owners in Phuket had sounded the alarm after being hit by the same sticky-fingered duo, who made off with entire jars of cannabis products. CCTV footage caught them in the act across multiple shops, racking up losses of over 100,000 baht. The Phuket Times later reported, on October 24, that the two were finally in police custody, though not thanks to any official investigation, but rather the furious victim’s own brand of rough justice. With attacks and thefts on the rise, cannabis shop owners across Thailand are now being urged to stay vigilant or risk becoming the next victims of a crime wave that’s anything but mellow. Iranian couple nicked after pulling sneaky money scam on touristsLegacyHolidaymakers in Pattaya got more than they bargained for when a smooth-talking Iranian couple allegedly fleeced unsuspecting tourists out of their hard-earned cash before the long arm of the law finally caught up with them. Pattaya Tourist Police chiefs Police Lieutenant Colonel Torlap Tinamat, Pol. Lt. Col. Supharat Meeprecha, Pol. Maj. Apichart Jarurak, with Chon Buri Immigration Police yesterday, April 28, at 4pm, paraded the Iranian couple at a press conference after nabbing them for a cheeky con that targeted tourists’ wallets. The suspects, named as 49 year old Ahmadi Fiouj Hooshang, 42 year old Mrs Mahmodi Kiya Ameneh, were slapped with charges of “jointly committing theft at night or receiving stolen goods”. It all kicked off on the night of April 24, when the Tourist Police Hotline (1155) took a frantic call from an Israeli holidaymaker. He reported being scammed by a Middle Eastern-looking man and woman, who had sweet-talked him into showing off his US dollars outside Twin Palms Resort, only for US$700 to vanish into thin air. Officers from Tourist Police Division 4 sprang into action, interviewing the victim and whisking him off to file an official complaint at Pattaya City Police Station. A swift investigation revealed the pair were holed up in a Jomtien area hotel. In a joint sting with Chon Buri Immigration cops, police raided the room and found the suspects along with crucial evidence: the exact clothing worn during the scam and seven US$100 bills tucked inside a wallet, the serial numbers matching the stolen notes. Police say the scam was a classic “short change” trick, the pair would strike up a friendly chat with tourists, pretending they had never seen foreign currency before. Anyone spotting suspicious behaviour is urged to ring the Tourist Police Hotline (1155), available around the clock. According to TPN Media, this sort of scam isn’t new to Thailand’s tourist hotspots, with several similar arrests in the past.
