To say Ashton Jones has been lucky is truly an understatement. A Welsh young man is reportedly back in UK after a near-death experience in Thailand.  Ashton Jones, a 29 year old vacationer, was mysteriously assaulted in Pattaya in June and disappeared from public view.  He then was discovered in intensive care at Chonburi public hospital, 50 miles away, where part of his skull was removed in emergency surgery. His chances of survival were recorded as low and it was even suggested that a non- resuscitation notice be prepared.  However, his father rushed to Thailand and never lost confidence in his son’s recovery.  His UK family published a GoFundMe request which produced a total of almost 32,000 pounds, or 1.4 million baht, which was sufficient to pay bills and repatriate Ashton to UK.  Some sources say cash help was also provided outside of the public campaign. Staff at the hospital, which is public sector and less expensive than medical facilities in the private sector, told Pattaya Mail that several agencies were involved in the repatriation.  A financial settlement, including a substantial discount, was reached with the hospital whilst a locally-based repatriation company (which we have been asked not to name) was very helpful.  But a key factor was the cash raised by the GoFundMe account which has since been ended.  The initial projected expenditure was 50,000 pounds plus. Thai police have not been able to publish details of the mysterious assault in Pattaya which created the crisis in the first police.  City Hall “Special Affairs” sources said that he was discovered in a main street and that the Sawangboriboon rescue service took him to Chonburi hospital in an emergency situation with serious head wounds. At that stage it was not known if Ashton was carrying medical insurance, but it was later disclosed he was not.  The family claims he “forgot”. Several GoFundMe donators commented on Ashton’s community popularity in his home town in Wales.   The family’s heart-felt cry for help certainly had a profound and beneficial impact in this particular case.  Cash sponsorship campaigns to raise funds for injured Brits in Thailand are now routine and have already reached 22 in 2025.  Their effectiveness varies a great deal but seems to depend on factors such as age of the patient, the amount of  public detail published and family perseverance. Joanne Finnamore-Crorkin, the British embassy consul including welfare, was in Pattaya this week to update British expats as part of the events to recall 170 years of British-Thai diplomatic relations.  She reminded in general terms that assaults as well as traffic accidents were sadly common in Thailand and that comprehensive medical insurance could be crucial.  Neither the British government nor the Thai authorities pay hospital bills.  Lucky doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Pole-axed! Trucker trapped in mangled cab after rain-slick smashLegacyA Thai truck driver was left trapped and bloodied after his six-wheeler spun out of control in heavy rain and slammed into an electric pole in Chon Buri. The crash happened at 9.45am yesterday, July 22 near the entrance to Ploy Yai Village along Highway 331 (Sattahip–Chachoengsao). The white Hino truck was returning from an auto parts delivery when it veered off the rain-soaked road. The driver, 59 year old Kiattisak Janthakasem, was pinned behind the wheel, unable to move as his cab crumpled around him. Rescuers from the Pattaya Sawang Boriboon Foundation raced to the scene armed with hydraulic cutting gear. They battled to free Kiattisak, who had suffered injuries to both legs. He received first aid at the scene before being rushed to Pattaya Hospital. Speaking from his hospital bed, Kiattisak told Pattaya News that he’d just delivered some parts and was heading back home. “The road was slick from the rain and I lost control. The truck spun and hit the pole. I couldn’t do anything.” Police are now investigating the incident to determine whether excessive speed, worn tyres, or other factors contributed to the crash. In the early hours of July 21, 24 year old Chanaphon Huadsi was left fighting for her life after ramming her Honda Zoomer-X motorbike into the rear of a stationary Toyota Commuter van on Sukhumvit Road. The van’s rear windscreen shattered on impact, and the mangled bike was found lodged in the back. Then, later the same day at 6.06pm, a bronze Honda Jazz ploughed through a packed Isaan restaurant in Soi Nong Yai after colliding with a pickup. A food vendor and a teenage girl were hurt in the chaos. Rescue teams were on the scene within minutes to treat the injured and clear the wreckage. The story Pole-axed! According to Wisuwat, the duo had met on Pattaya Beach and checked into the hotel together. But things quickly spiralled when they reportedly clashed over payment terms. As their heated exchange echoed through the corridors, Wisuwat approached the pair and politely asked them to take the matter downstairs to avoid disturbing other guests. That’s when the woman allegedly snapped. “Instead of calming down, she suddenly turned on me and struck my head with her phone,” Wisuwat said from his hospital bed. “There was blood, and she ran off before anyone could stop her.” Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, providing first aid before rushing Wisuwat to a nearby hospital for treatment. Motorcycle crash in Pattaya due to unsecured gate leaves two injuredLegacyStrong winds caused a metal gate to swing open onto the road, leading to a motorcycle collision that injured two young people. The accident occurred in Soi Na Kluea 16, Pattaya, and while the injured have reported the incident, there has been no response from the landowner. The injured parties are identified as 20 year old Thanapon Thanathapsapanitch and 19 year old Ratthakan Ranuwasri. At the time of the accident, they were riding a Yamaha Fino motorcycle in the alley. Upon reaching the scene, the gate swung open, resulting in a collision that caused them to crash and sustain injuries. Both were taken to Pattaya Patthamakun Hospital. Thanapon suffered a broken arm and has since returned to his home in Ang Thong for further treatment. Ratthakan, who was riding with him, is yet to be contacted due to her damaged mobile phone. However, she has filed a police report with Pattaya City Police Station. The landowner has yet to reach out for assistance or compensation. Soi Na Kluea 16, a thoroughfare frequented by small and large vehicles and bustling with tourists due to nearby hotels, is where the accident took place, reported KhaoSod. A hotel security guard near the site disclosed that the incident happened on the evening of July 20 during strong winds. He heard a loud crash and, upon inspection, saw the gate had been blown open, causing the motorcycle to collide forcefully. He noted that the gate would often make noise during strong winds. In similar news, a 29 year old woman sought help on the Sai Mai Must Survive Facebook page after a collision with a white pickup truck in Thanyaburi on June 17 around 10pm. After finishing work, Ubonrat was riding her motorcycle to dinner when she stopped to take a call. Suddenly, the pickup truck struck her, throwing her several metres away.
