WWW.PATTAYAMAIL.COMHelmet Heroes presents child safety mission to Pattaya City Expats ClubRick Brown concludes his presentation by informing his PCEC audience about how they can help Helmet Heroes through donations, noting a single donation of 550 baht will be enough to provide a helmet for a child. PATTAYA, Thailand – On July 2nd, Rick Brown, the founder of Helmet Heroes, delivered an inspiring presentation at the Pattaya City Expats Club. Rick, an author and traveler, shared his personal journey and the impactful work of his organization, which aims to promote helmet use among children to reduce motorcycle accidents and protect the future generation. Rick’s motivation to start Helmet Heroes stems from a traumatic childhood experience. He recounted an event when he was 14 years old. He mentioned that he was bullied in high school, and they sabotaged the brakes on his bicycle resulting in a fall that injured him severely. Upon coming to Thailand to live, he observed many children riding motorcycles without helmets. His personal history fueled his determination to address the lack of helmet use among children. Initially, Rick began by purchasing helmets and distributing them with the cooperation of local police. His efforts quickly gained positive reactions and personal fulfillment from protecting children’s lives. The initiative soon went viral on social media and was featured on Channel 7 news, significantly increasing its visibility and impact. Helmet Heroes has since evolved into a formal organization, partnering with Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya, local police, hospitals, and sponsors such as Ducati and Harley-Davidson to expand helmet distribution efforts. Rick gave special thanks to Maxwell “Max” Kimberley-Thompson, current President of the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya for his support and devoting much of his time to assist with Helmet Heroes in their efforts. MC Ren Lexander presents the PCEC’s Certificate of Appreciation to “Savvy” Rick Brown for his informative and inspiring presentation about the worthwhile efforts of Helmet Heroes in providing free motorcycle helmets and educating children on the importance of their use. Rick emphasized that all helmets distributed are TIS certified and sourced from approved Thai factories, ensuring safety and legitimacy – TIS certification signifies that it meets the standards set by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute, which is a Thailand regulatory body that ensures the helmet meets specific safety requirements. Rick noted that an important part of their efforts is to visit schools in company with police officers and emergency medical personnel to educate the children about motorcycle helmet safety and why it is important to wear a helmet. This system includes a digital map on their website where children can see local businesses offering rewards like stickers, ice cream, and other treats for wearing their helmets. This approach aims to make helmet-wearing a fun and rewarding habit for children, thereby increasing compliance and enhancing their safety. Rick’s presentation highlighted the significant strides Helmet Heroes has made in protecting Thailand’s future. For more information about Helmet Heroes and how to support their mission, visit their website at https://www.helmetheroesthailand.org/ or contact Rick by email at [email protected]. After Rick’s presentation, MC Ren Lexander updated everyone on upcoming PCEC activities. This was followed with the Open Forum portion of the meeting where questions are asked or comments made about Expat living in Thailand. THETHAIGER.COMHit-and-run: Pattaya bartender bruised as red-light rat does runnerHit-and-run: Pattaya bartender bruised as red-light rat does runnerLegacyA young Pattaya bartender was left bruised and battered after a reckless motorist ran a red light and smashed into his motorbike, before speeding off without a word. Thanakrit Sanamphon, better known to friends as Jay, was riding home in the early hours when the white Honda City sedan cut him off at the Naklua traffic lights on Sukhumvit Road, heading towards Chon Buri. Dashcam footage, later shared by the Facebook page Social Hunter 2022, shows the Honda making an illegal right turn against the red, slamming straight into the 28 year old’s Kawasaki Z900 and sending him flying into a parked pickup. The crash happened just after 2am, yesterday, July 8. The bartender, who works at a hotel in Sattahip, suffered scrapes, bruises and lingering headaches but was lucky not to be more seriously hurt. Pictures courtesy of Pattaya News Speaking at the scene on July 8, Thanakrit told Pattaya News that he wants the other party to come forward and talk and not run from the problem. “That night, things could have been much worse for me. They didn’t even stop to check and just sped off. I’m determined to find them and hold them accountable.” Thanakrit, who had just been discharged from hospital, returned to the crash site to hunt for CCTV evidence. He said he flashed his lights as he crossed on green, fearing a cut-off and moments later, his worst fears came true. “I tried to brake, but I couldn’t stop in time. I hit the back of the car, then bounced off a truck.” After the smash, the white sedan fled towards Pattaya-Naklua Road, reportedly pulling a U-turn in a nearby alley before briefly stopping at a petrol station. Police are now reviewing CCTV in a bid to track down the hit-and-run driver. While the car’s make is known, the licence plate remains elusive. Anyone with information is urged to contact local police. THETHAIGER.COMFatal curve: Landlord’s life ends in horror smash on pattaya bendFatal curve: Landlord’s life ends in horror smash on pattaya bendLegacyA Pattaya landlord was killed in the early hours of yesterday morning after losing control of his car on a notorious bend and ploughing into a house wall. The 61 year old, Bang-oen Wiang, who managed rental row houses in the area, died at the scene despite frantic efforts by emergency crews to revive him. The crash occurred at 1.36am, yesterday, July 8, on Soi Chak Ngaew 14/1, known locally as Soi Nam Hom, when Bang-oen’s blue Mitsubishi Attrage sedan veered off the curve at high speed and slammed into a residential wall. Volunteers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Unit and officers from Huay Yai Police Station arrived to find the vehicle crumpled and the driver unresponsive behind the wheel. Rescue workers used specialist equipment to free the trapped landlord and perform CPR, but his injuries were too severe. Shocked relatives arrived shortly after and were consoled by emergency personnel. Locals reported being jolted awake by the deafening crash. “It sounded like an explosion,” said one resident. Another neighbour said, “We came out and saw the car jammed into the wall. He was still inside.” A witness driving behind the victim told police the car was speeding before it lost control and careened off the bend. The witness immediately called emergency services. Investigators photographed the scene and collected evidence, while Bang-oen’s body was transferred to Pattaya Hospital to await collection for religious rites. Police say the investigation is ongoing, Pattaya News reported. The crash came just days after another driver in Pattaya had a much luckier escape. Picture courtesy of Pattaya News On July 2, a sleepy 24 year old man, Jetsadakorn, flipped his Toyota Yaris on South Pattaya Road near Moo 10 after dozing off at the wheel in a three-vehicle pile-up. His car landed upside-down, blocking traffic but he miraculously emerged without a scratch. Police said the vehicle, registered in Nakhon Ratchasima, was a write-off. Jetsadakorn admitted he was drowsy while driving his girlfriend home.
