Foreign patient numbers surge as Thai healthcare embraces preventive care and tech innovation
Despite economic headwinds, Thailand’s healthcare sector shows strong growth, led by Gen Y and Z’s shift toward wellness and preventive care. Praram 9 Hospital reports rising foreign patients, revenue gains, and unveils plans for AI-driven upgrades and sustainable expansion in 2025. PATTAYA, Thailand – Thailand’s healthcare sector is demonstrating continued growth amidst a challenging economy, driven by younger generations and an influx of foreign patients who are increasingly focused on preventive health and wellness. Recent travel data has named Pattaya as the most visited destination in Thailand for short overnight stays, particularly among international visitors. This trend aligns with a growing number of foreign residents, long-haul travelers, and wellness tourists who come not only for leisure but also for access to quality, affordable medical services — a combination that continues to support the rise of Thailand’s healthcare sector. Dr. Wittaya Wanpen, Deputy Director of Strategic Planning at Praram 9 Hospital, revealed that while many industries are struggling, healthcare remains resilient. He attributed this growth to Gen Y and Gen Z trends, where patients are visiting hospitals not just for illness but also for preventive care — including check-ups, physiotherapy, sleep consultations, and nutrition planning. He noted that Praram 9 Hospital’s proportion of foreign patients has risen to 25 percent from 10 percent, with increasing demand from CLMV countries, China, and the Middle East. Many of these clients reside long-term in major hubs like Pattaya, where a significant foreign community continues to grow, attracted by a combination of quality of life, proximity to Bangkok’s healthcare centers, and value-for-money services. Although Chinese tourist numbers have dropped, Dr. Wittaya explained that most of the hospital’s Chinese clients are Thailand-based residents, many of whom live in Pattaya and make regular trips to Bangkok for specialized care. In response to potential indirect economic impacts from U.S. tariffs, the hospital has not raised treatment prices this year and offers discounts to long-term patients. To mark its 33rd anniversary, Praram 9 launched the “9 SMART” LINE Application, which lets patients manage appointments, track queue status, and instantly access lab and diagnostic results — all with secure identity verification. Ms. Khamaporn Thampipit, Deputy Director of Accounting and Finance, reported that in Q1 2025, Praram 9 Hospital achieved 1,251.2 million baht in revenue and 200.5 million baht in net profit — a 16 percent year-on-year growth driven by the foreign patient segment. To accommodate future demand, the hospital plans to renovate and expand capacity by adding 20 beds, creating a nine-bed Stroke Unit in its ICU, and increasing dialysis stations from 17 to 20. It will also invest in AI-powered medical equipment as it moves toward becoming a fully AI-Driven Hospital with a focus on sustainability. As Pattaya continues to thrive as a weekend escape and short-stay hotspot, its role as a regional anchor for both tourism and long-term foreign living strengthens healthcare demand — ensuring hospitals like Praram 9 remain an integral part of the wellness journey for both Thai and international communities.
